Chapter History

The Hot Springs Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was charted on March 21, 1987. Soror Juanita Carol Williams, a member of the Little Rock Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., facilitated the chartering of the Hot Springs Area Alumnae Chapter.

The Hot Springs area was conducive to the establishment of the local chapter because the area had no recognizable Greek Letter societies where African Americans held membership.  There was no African American organization in Hot Springs that encouraged high academic standards, carried on charitable and educational programs, or sponsored social activities for the community.  Therefore, the community was very receptive to the chartering of this chapter.  After all efforts to reach Deltas in the Hot Springs, Arkadelphia, Benton, and Malvern areas were exhausted, five sorors from the Little Rock Alumnae Chapter helped to meet the membership requirements for chartering.

On March 21, 1987, after much hard work, patience, and prayerful vision, the Hot Springs Area Alumnae Chapter was chartered by thirteen women who dared to venture.  These women recognized the need to organize their collective power into such efforts that could benefit communities, schools, churches, and individuals.  The chapter was chartered during the tenure of Soror Morlin M. McCoy, Southwest Regional Director, and Soror Hortense Golden Canady, 18th National President.

The chapter immediately went to work carrying out the Five Point Thrust Programs of the sorority and initiated a group of ten women into the chapter in 1987.  Other lines include Spring 2002—two initiates; Spring 2003—three initiates; Spring 2007—thirteen initiates; Spring 2018-six initiates.  The chapter currently has 37 members.
